Week 5 · 45 minutes
Automate Your Money
Build a system that runs whether you're motivated or not.
The big idea
Willpower is a terrible financial plan. Route every dollar automatically on payday so the right thing happens by default.
Build a system that runs whether you're motivated or not.
The money flow
Paycheck lands in checking, then automatic transfers push money outward within a day or two. You only ever look at what's left.
- Paycheck → checking (plus pre-tax retirement contributions)
- Checking → savings sub-goals
- Checking → investment account
- Checking → credit card full payment
- Remainder = guilt-free spending
Calendar mechanics
Schedule transfers a couple of days after payday so nothing bounces. If you're paid irregularly, transfer a percentage manually on a fixed weekly day.
Maintenance is minutes, not hours
Once running, the system needs about an hour a month: check balances, confirm transfers fired, adjust one number if life changed.
Active learning check
List every automatic transfer you have today, with amount and date. How many are missing from the flow above?
Zero automation means every good outcome depends on you remembering. Fix one link this week.
Lesson quiz
3 of 4 to pass1. Why automate instead of transferring manually each month?
2. When should automatic transfers be scheduled?
3. In the flow, what does "the remainder" represent?
4. Roughly how much monthly upkeep should the system need?
Practice tasks for this week
Do these after the lesson, before you start Week 6.
